Star Air Service was founded in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1932 by Steve Mills, Charlie Ruttan, and Jack Waterworth, initially operating a single biplane for flight training.

The acquisition of a Curtiss Robin allowed the company to expand and begin regular commercial operations. In 1935, they acquired McGee Airways, another Anchorage-based airline, consolidating Star as the leading air operator in Alaska.

After several name changes, the company was officially renamed Alaska Airlines Inc. in 1944, a name it still carries today.
