The Percival Mew Gull E.2H, registered ZS-AHM and named "The Golden City", was built to compete in the 1936 Schlesinger Race, a demanding air race from Portsmouth (UK) to Johannesburg (South Africa).

It was flown by the renowned Maj. Allister Miller,well-known pioneer pilot of South African aviation

Although he did not complete the race, Rose's flight in "The Golden City" was remarkable: he reached Salisbury, the capital of Southern Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe). Despite its British-sounding name, Salisbury is located over 7,500 km from Portsmouth, highlighting the aircraft’s impressive range and endurance under extreme conditions.

Mechanical issues forced Rose to retire at that point, but the flight remains a testament to the ambition and performance of British light aviation in the 1930s.
